Vegan Dr Martens Review
The vegan Dr Martens shoes and boots use synthetic materials specifically guaranteed to be vegan-friendly. They are soft and supple while also being thick and durable. The quality looking material has the appearance of leather and is not at all cheap or plastic. The material is also waterproof and easy to clean.
This is a good quality product made with a solid construction. As with other Dr Martens products, the vegan range is “Goodyear-welted”, meaning that the upper and and sole are heat sealed and sewn together for durability. This makes them more sturdy than competitors products that merely glue the parts together. These are tough shoes built for walking so they last years. They have a textured sole to provide a slip-resistant grip which is also acid, petrol and alkali resistant, which makes them a good choice for work boots.
In terms of quality, you also have the peace of mind of buying from a well-known, long-standing company, with a good reputation to uphold. The shoes and boots have been highly reviewed on line with many, many happy customers who report the shoes are comfortable. They have the cushioned foot bed that Dr Martens are famous to soften your steps by absorbing shock. Some people report needing to wear them in for a few weeks, though many said that wasn’t needed and they were comfortable right out of the box.
There’s also a plus from an activist point of view… buying a well-known, mainstream brand encourages Dr Martens and other mainstream labels to create more vegan product lines in future.
So far there are are only 4 styles of Dr Martens available in the 100% vegan option, which is significantly less than the entire Air Wear range. While they’re not yet available in as many colors and styles as people would like, by supporting the company’s initiative to have a vegan line, you will encourage them to expand the range in future!
Vegan Dr Martens are not readily available for purchase in stores, as there’s not a high enough turn over for shops to stock them. You can buy them online from Amazon, which offers free return on some sizes and colors, to ensure you get the right fit.
A note on sizing
These shoes are true to size of the traditional Dr Martens boots. Some people have commented that they are on the narrow side, and can be tight across the top. So for people with larger feet (in the sense of higher not longer) it can take several weeks to wear in new shoes to fit your feet well. After they’ve stretched out to conform to your foot, then they’ll be comfortable.
Shoe protection suitable for vegans
Polishing your shoes or boots regularly helps to maintain their smooth finish and make them last longer. Dr. Martens Ultra Protector is an environmentally friendly, non-aerosol spray mister that adds a layer of protection to your shoes. Unlike many other shoe protectors, this one does not contain bees wax. Give your shoes a spray monthly to keep your vegan Dr Martens looking great.
